Celebrating Birthdays – The Only Way to Go!

There are two days I wake up especially early on ~ Christmas and my birthday. They’re both really special days, and I don’t want to miss a minute of celebrating. This is the way for celebrating birthdays – the Only Way to go!

As soon as my birthday month begins, I can feel the anticipation building to my day. It’s such a fun feeling.

And it’s not even about getting gifts. No, not at all. It’s about me being me and how on that day, I don’t have to do anything I don’t want to.

Yeah, that’s the rule in our house ~ there’s no shoulds or have tos. And I get to pick what I want to eat.
You see, we’re all so unique. There’s only one me, one special me in this huge universe ~ and that’s worth celebrating! Dr. Seuss says it best:

You see, we’re all so unique.  There’s only one me, one special me in this huge universe ~ and that’s worth celebrating!  Dr. Seuss says it best:

Today you are You, that is truer than true.
There is no one alive who is Youer than You.

On my birthday, I’ll think and do only things that make me happy ~ that will keep a big smile on my face ~ that delight me ~ that tickle my fancy ~ that bring me joy. Like writing in my journal, painting, making a collage, being in the garden, taking a walk to nowhere special, laughing with my best friends, and just dreaming about the future what will best.

Oh, and the kindness that comes from others is so very special. Friends and family always say they hope all my dreams come true during my new year. And each birthday does start our very own new year, especially now as I’m in Ireland to complete my high school education here.

And as I get older, my dreams keep coming true, and I believe it is because of the love and kindness others put into their wishes for me and my own love for myself. That’s probably the biggest gift I can give myself – keeping my heart open to receive the love coming from someone else, knowing it’s okay to be loved, to be showered with attention.

I also know how important it is to be kind to myself, to not say negative things about myself, to not be critical and judgmental. I remember to say things to myself that I would say to my best friends.

A friend sent these words to me:

Set your birthday dreams free
Send them off with a smile, a whisper or a song
And they will travel on the wings of mystery
And show your heart the way to miracles.

Miracles happen every day.  In fact, each of us is a miracle ~ really, we are.

So come on, I know you must have lots of things that put a smile on your face and a sweetness in your heart? What are they? Do you let yourself have time to experience them? Do you take the time to celebrate you? Dr. Seuss knows about doing things you’ve never done and are fun:

Did you ever fly a kite in bed?
Did you ever walk with ten cats on your head?

Did you ever milk this kind of cow?
Well, we can do it. We know how.

If you never did, you should.
These things are fun and fun is good.

Here are some ways to celebrate the uniqueness of you on your birthday or any day for that matter:

  • Write down at least ten things you can do for yourself that is not a should or a have to.
  • Get a massage, a mani/pedi, a facial, or a new hairdo (or maybe all four).
  • Be in nature, whether that’s a walk on the beach or on a trail or even in your neighborhood.
  • Eat something delicious, that you don’t normally eat but love.
  • Do something creative (paint, draw, make a collage).
  • And most of all, do something fun!

What else? What would you add to this list?
